Under the legislation, a $100 fine could be issued if drivers are caught idling more than 3 minutes in a 60 minute period. That could make a significant reduction in greenhouse gas and other tail pipe emissions coming from vehicle.
Update: Bill 230, the Anti-idling Act was introduced as a Private Members' bill last fall and did not get beyond first reading before Session ended. It is no longer on the Order Paper due to the opening of another Session. However, Minister Renner's office advises that work continues to assess and evaluate the potential impacts and benefits associated with anti-idling legislation.
Fight climate change by fighting car emissions
Help fight climate change by choosing public transit, walking or cycling instead of driving henever you can. In Canada, transportation contributes to more than 30 per cent of total greenhouse gas emissions. Next time you're shopping, going to a movie, visiting a friend or taking the kids to and from school, choose an alternative form of transportation to your car.
By committing to drive less and to support higher vehicle emission standards you are letting the government know that you are taking action to fight climate change and you also want them to take action.
Should you turn off your engine while waiting in a line or in traffic?
Obviously for safety and practical reasons it makes no sense to shut an engine off in traffic that is moving. But any time one anticipates the vehicle standing still for over five minutes it makes sense, both in terms of fuel and emissions, to shut down the engine.
